It has been just under 2 weeks that we have left Maui and started exploring the wonders of Costa Rica. After a truly tiring trip involving stopovers in Los Angeles and Guatemala we finally made it into San Jose, capital of Costa Rica.

After spending the first night in this sprawling center of the regional economy we set out to the north west coast by mini bus and ferry and arrived at a little beach community called Santa Teresa. Here it’s all about surfing and beach life. We really enjoyed this for about a week before the intense heat and and the spring breakers got to us and we decided to leave.

We rented a car and set off along the coast due north. After about 25 miles, which took us about an hour and half (these roads are some of the worst I have ever seen) we left the beach and turned inland. After another 2 hours of gruesome pot hole evading we hit a paved road and made good time.

Just before dusk we arrived at a little pueblo called Tronadora on the shores of Arenal Lake. We had booked into a small B&B to see what the volcano park and rainforests are like. We spent the next five days roaming the area and seeing incredible sights and nature. Here’s just a first brief peek at some of our impressions so far.
